Mount Zion Community Development, Inc. (MZCD) 

is a 501(c)(3) redevelopment nonprofit community-based corporation.

The Mission

Mission

To advocate and amplify the voices of people of color in particular and all people in general who are disproportionately impacted by health disparities and to address the need for jobs, housing, crime prevention, education, and health care.

Vision

To build a thriving community that reduces barriers, systemic and institutional racism, and ensures access to employment, quality healthcare, education, and housing for people of color.

Act/Access

To impact health disparities by partnering with faith-based organizations, policymakers, hospitals, and nonprofits to implement evidence-based programs and strategies that empower people of color in particular and all people in general who are impacted.

Programmatic Leadership

Belinda Kennedy Grant, CEO

Oversee the day-to-day operations and program of Mount Zion Community Development, Inc., a 501 © 3 Non-Profit Redevelopment organization 


Responsible for leading MZCD in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Board of Directors Report to and work closely with the Board of Directors to seek their involvement in policy decisions, fundraising and to increase the overall visibility of the MZCD throughout the State


Responsible for the fiscal integrity of MZCD, to include submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.


Planning and operation of annual budget.


Responsible for fiscal management that anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.


Submit all required financial reporting documents to grant funders and abide by contractual agreement thereof.


CEO is responsible for reviewing documents and reports to ensure adherence to governmental compliance


Four Programs: National & State Models:

a. Project NAF (Nurturing Asheville & Area Families: Minority Infant Mortality Project. 

b. Project EMPOWER (Education Means Power), Buncombe County’s Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative (TPPI).

c. Elizabeth Grant Hill Campus of Learners: Internet support services for underserved community (presently inactive).

d. Real Estate Development: Works with leadership team of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church of Asheville, Inc. to develop properties. 


2021-to Present: Appointed to Leadership of Buncombe County’s Community Health Improvement Process 

2021 to Present: Board of Directors, Helpmate, Asheville, NC

2021 to Present: Committee member of the NCPHA Continuing Education Training Advisory Committee 

2014: Profiled as a Community Leader in The Urban News (Asheville, Buncombe County)

2013: Recipient of the Lisa C. Clarke Bridge Builder Award (NC DHHS Award). This award honors an individual or program that builds collaborations and/or closes gaps between systems within their local community. The individual or program nominated for this award needs to demonstrate outstanding service in the four key areas:


Communication: Recognizes a need or identifies a service gap and open channels of discussion between agencies and programs to meet a need or fill a gap. This work may entail connecting agencies, facilitating meetings, developing referral partnerships or making policy changes that addresses a barrier to clients’ access to services. 


Health disparity reduction: Focuses efforts beyond the immediate scope of the program; promotes the engagement of non-traditional partners; and ensures that individuals and communities understand and embrace program efforts that seek to reduce health disparities.


Best practices: Moves best practices from theory to action; helps programs embrace and integrate best practices into their work and ensuring that program partners are aware of and understand the full scope of the program. 


Advocacy: Serves as a champion for programs and communities around issues that affect women, children, and families.
